Practice to remain Alert
Part - 1

Do you know why I came to Nepal? No one can say for certain if I will come here again in the future. You yourself may or may not be here. Anything can happen anywhere at any time. What will the condition in Nepal be in the future? There are so many things that happen in the world that a human being just cannot foresee.

Now this human body is desired even by the celestial gods, the same gods who we worship and offer our salutations to - Indra, Varun, Kuber, Agni and so on. They desire this body out of the 8.4 million different types of bodies that are available in the material world. That is because we as humans have the freedom to earn in this body and can attain divine bliss and God’s abode for eternity.

In addition I have told you many, many times that there are no rules and regulations to attain God. All we need to do, all we have to do, is to accept Him as our own and that too, because our self-interest is to be attained from Him. No one in the world is ours besides God and our Guru. There is no time limit on this body; no guarantee that we will be here for a specific period of time, and neither can we take anyone with us to serve us. You will have to go alone! Close your eyes and think, “I will have to go alone, everything I have will be left behind.” Everybody else will also leave later according to his own destiny and actions. You will never see your father, your mother, your husband or wife or children ever again. They will all go to their respective destinations to reap the consequences of their respective actions. They will have to go either to the celestial abodes, hell or come back here on Earth. Therefore, we need to be alert at all times.

When you walk through the city you are alert all the time. You notice that a car is coming from the front, one from the back and a scooter from the side. If you are slightly careless you can get into a serious accident. But we are very careful when we go out. We go to the market for a period of an hour and come back home safely. We have done this thousands of times without meeting with an accident. Why was that? We were alert all the time. You think, “O there is a car coming from the back and there is very little space in front so let me stand aside to the left.”

So you were so concerned about your body that in spite of going out hundreds of times you never got into an accident. But you have no such concern about your soul.

Part - 2

You do not care what will happen after death. This human body is a priceless treasure which does not come again and again. Do not assume that you will get a human body automatically again, and then meet some “Kripalu” again who will guide you and then you will act according to His instructions. Each of these things is very, very rare to attain.

Shankaracharya says three things are very rare to obtain. First is the human birth: kabahuka kari karuna nardehi deta esha binu hetu sanehi. (Ramayana) Sometimes the Lord out of His causeless mercy, grants a soul a human birth. This is obtained after thousands, millions of births. But you will not attain your goal just by getting the human body: manushyatvam mukshyatvam mahapurusha sambhava. You will have to meet a genuine Saint. Even after reading the scriptures for millions of lives, we will not understand what we are supposed to do. There are all kinds of contradictory instructions to be found in the scriptures. One will become extremely confused by reading them. But a Saint will tell you in brief, “Do this.”

So secondly, meeting a genuine Saint is even rarer. But thirdly, if we meet a Saint but do not accept him as one, or we do not surrender to him and act according to his instructions – i.e. you do not have faith in him or his instructions - then what will be the benefit of having met a Saint? We got a human body, we met a genuine Saint, but we committed spiritual transgressions by going to the Saint and using our intellect to analyse him and his actions, and we returned.

So these three things are extremely rare, and if someone has all three and still does not attempt to attain his goal, there can be and never will be a person more unfortunate than him. All these things fall into place, but he does not take advantage of it.

Part - 3

If there is a hungry man and someone gives him fifty-six delicacies served on a golden platter free of cost, but he does not eat yet he considers himself intelligent and makes all kinds of excuses, “You see it’s like this and like that,” and so on to avoid eating. Just think, how will these excuses protect you when Yamaraja (the god of death) summons you to leave this world? You will have to leave all your property, your wife and children and go alone. Therefore, please practice what I am telling you: the realisation that Shyamasundara is seated in your heart, noting each and every one of your thoughts.

Have faith in this statement and practice remembering it constantly. There will be a little effort involved initially. In an hour you might remember Him for just a second, “Yes He is seated in my heart and I was harbouring such dirty thoughts.” Now become alert. Then try remembering Him for a second every half hour. We don’t need to misuse our time. Just as you scratch yourself while working, or hear a sound somewhere and look in that direction for a moment, in the same way, for an equal period of time that you do something like that, just realise, “He is seated within; I am not alone. He is there seated with me.” You will have to practice this. Memorise this point! YOU will HAVE to practice this!

After a few days of practice, you will start to experience His presence. You will think, “Yes! He is seated within.” Then you will not waste your time thinking, “Let’s go over to the neighbours and gossip a little with them,” or “Let’s go talk to the wife, how do I just pass the time sitting here?” Then you will be alert all the time. You will think, “I don’t know if I will have the next moment or not.” The greatest of physicians, Prime Ministers or other important people just go in a moment. They didn’t even think something like this would happen, but in a moment they are gone. Therefore, practice this spiritual discipline with great care.
